This intervention is about ensuring that carers have access to services that allow them to maintain a life of their own by taking regular breaks from their caring role.

Depending on the needs and wishes of local carers, the methods for delivering Breaks can include:
 
  • residential respite
  • domiciliary care including help with personal and complex care
  • individually-tailored breaks provision
  • voucher schemes
  • planning for ways of achieving breaks where specific services do not exist (e.g. for substance misuse carers).
 
This is not a prescriptive list of the services required for each area, but the practice examples can be used to inspire ideas about creative and inventive ways to meet the outcomes of the National Carers’ Strategy.
